What is it?
A chemical peel is a process of rejuvenating the skin by  applying specifically chosen chemicals to interact with the outer epidermal layer of skin causing a “peel” of the dead cells. Penetration of the chemical stimulates cell activity and eventual production of collagen and elastin fibers . The result is tighter, smoother, brighter and healthier skin . The degree of aging, skin damage, and overall condition of the skin are just some factors considered when choosing the specific chemical for the procedure.

How Does it work?
Medical grade Acids such as glycolic, salicylic, mandelic , TCA, or Jessner’s solution  are applied to the skin which promotes the removal of old cells, bacteria, and oils. These chemicals also stimulate collagen and elastin for new cell growth.

What conditions best respond to Chemical Peels?
Chemical Peels work very well for Acne and Acne prone skin, Hyperpigmentation, and age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and any skin which is dull , in poor health, or has large pores.

Does It hurt?
Chemical Peels are typically  not painful.  Depending on the  solution, varying degrees of a heat sensation and or stinging, itching, or burning sensation may  occur  and last for a short time. A fan blowing on the area being treated is usually all that is needed for comfort.  At Silk… only superficial and medium depth peels are performed which unlike deeper peels , require no anesthesia. Additonally, only free acids ( not heavly buffered ) are used which promotes comfort and excellent results.

What are the side effects?
There are no actual side effects; rarely areas of Hyperpigmentation can occur which would require additional treatment. Some patients more sensitive to a particular chemical may develop an area of temporary crusting , and redness or may experience varying degrees of discomfort, similar to an intense sunburn. Anyone predisposed to Herpes, may have an outbreak, especially if being treated on the face.  All patients are carefully screened  and may require specific pretreatments to optimize treatment outcomes.

Is there any downtime?
Depending on the specific peel solution, there may be mild to moderate redness immediately to a few hours post peel to actual marked redness, with soreness  scabbing and crusting 2 to 4 days post procedure, followed by peeling of the outer layer of skin. At Silk… , Vitamin C 15%, and a Hydrating serum  is applied immediately after the procedure which minimizes any evidence of a procedure.  Typically you can resume usual activity immediately. Make up can be worn as long as there is no crusting or oozing.

What results can I expect?
Following a course of 4 to 6  chemical peel treatments, acne is dramatically improved, skin is tighter, looks healthier, with more even skin tones, and fine lines and  wrinkles are noticeably reduced.

Who are the best candidates to have the Procedure?
Anyone who is healthy, willing to comply with specific skin care routines, has patience and reasonable expectations for positive outcomes. Chemical Peels can be performed on all skin types and can be combined with Microderabrasion, and laser therapies to maximize overall effects.

Who should not have the procedure?
Anyone who has used Accutane or its equivalent within 6 months, anyone who is a “picker” or develops keloids, anyone who has allergies to any component of the Peel solution, are not candidates for Chemical Peels.  Retin A products should not be used for approximately 3 to 7 days ( dosage concentration dependent) before procedure.

How many treatments do I need to achieve optimum results?
The Silk protocol treatment plan is typically designed for  8 treatments within a 12 week period. Peel procedures, often alternated with microdermabrasion, initially are scheduled at 7 days, 14 days then at 21 day intervals. Depending on the status of the skin, the first 1 to 2 appointments, may be a combination of chemical peel and microdermabrasion.treatments , as a means to jump start the repair and rejuvenation process. Following the initial plan, maintenance treatments are performed every 4 to 6 weeks. Acne treatment protocols vary with age, gender, changing skin health condition, and laser therapy considerations.
